A labyrinth is an ancient symbol of wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world.
One of the most famous labyrinths remaining in the world is at the Chartres Cathedral near Paris, France. The labyrinth at Chartres was built around 1200 A.D. and is laid into the floor (see image). At the center of the labyrinth is a rosette design that has a deep spiritual symbolic value including that of enlightenment.
