Symbolism
For more than a month the Buddha meditated beneath a fig tree in Bodh Gaya, India. After 49 days, he stood from his meditative position and gave thanks to the tree for its shade and found enlightenment. The fig tree that sheltered Buddha became known as the Bodhi Tree or tree of enlightenment.
