Labyrinth Mala

M-514

The necklace features a combination of 108 natural wood, unakite, and carnelian. The beads are the smaller 6mm size and the necklace is finished with a double-sided 1 inch copper labyrinth pendant.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol of wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer tools.

One of the most famous of labyrinths remaining in the world is at the Chartres Cathedral near Paris, France. The labyrinth at Chartres was built around 1200 A.D. and is laid into the floor (see image). At the center of the labyrinth is a rosette design which has a deep spiritual symbolic value including that of enlightenment. In historical times the labyrinth could be walked as a pilgrimage and/or for repentance. As a pilgrimage it was a questing, searching journey with the hope of becoming closer to God. When used for repentance the pilgrims would walk on their knees.
