A month with two full moons feels like a cosmic invitation to pause twice: once to notice what is rising, and once to decide what you are ready to release. Most months bring only one full moon, so when two appear in the same calendar month, the second is commonly called a Blue Moon.
In 2026, that rare-feeling rhythm happens in May, giving the month a powerful symbolic arc: illumination at the beginning, reflection at the end. Whether you are deeply spiritual, simply curious about lunar cycles, or looking for a meaningful way to stay consistent with meditation, a two-full-moon month can become a practical time for clarity, intention-setting, and emotional renewal.
A calendar month with two full moons is unique because the lunar cycle is about 29.5 days long, while many calendar months are 30 or 31 days. When a full moon lands very early in a long month, there is enough time for another full moon to arrive before the month ends. The second full moon in that calendar month is known as a monthly Blue Moon.
Spiritually, this creates a beautiful structure for intention work. The first full moon can be used for awareness: What is being revealed? What emotional patterns, desires, habits, or goals are asking for your attention? The second full moon can be used for integration: What have you learned since the first full moon? What needs to be released so the next version of you can emerge?
Think of a two-full-moon month as a built-in reflection cycle. Instead of setting a goal once and forgetting it, you get two luminous checkpoints. On the first full moon, you might name an intention such as, “I am ready to trust my voice,” “I am releasing fear around money,” or “I am making space for healthier love.” By the second full moon, you can return to that intention and ask: Did my actions match my desire? What shifted? What still feels heavy? What is now complete?
This does not mean the moon magically accomplishes your goals for you. Its power is partly symbolic and partly behavioral. Meditation helps people notice their inner state. A full moon gives you a visible, recurring marker in the sky, and a Blue Moon gives you a rare-feeling second chance to refine your direction before the month closes.
In 2026, the month with two full moons is May. The first full moon is the Flower Moon on Friday, May 1, 2026. The second is the Blue Moon on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Check out the list of Full Moon dates for the full year here.
For meditation, these dates can be used as:
May 1 Full Moon: meditate on clarity, gratitude, truth, and what is already fully visible in your life.
May 31 Blue Moon: meditate on release, completion, renewal, and the intention you want to carry into June.
Full moon meditation is popular because the full moon is associated with visibility. In the sky, it is the moment when the moon appears fully illuminated from Earth. NASA explains that the moon does not create its own light; moonlight is reflected sunlight, and during the full moon we see the completely illuminated side facing Earth.
In meditation, that symbolism can be deeply useful. A full moon practice often focuses on reflection, gratitude, emotional honesty, forgiveness, and release. It is a natural time to ask: What am I carrying that no longer belongs to me? What truth have I avoided? What am I ready to complete?
The best time to meditate for the full moon is within the 24 hours before or after peak fullness. You do not have to meditate at the exact astronomical minute. The moon appears full to the eye for a few nights around the full moon.
For a simple full moon practice, choose a quiet evening near the full moon. Sit somewhere comfortable, ideally where you can see the moon or feel connected to the sky. Light a candle and begin with slow breathing. Then ask yourself three questions:
What is being illuminated in my life right now?
What am I grateful for?
What am I ready to release?
For the May 2026 two-full-moon month, try a two-part ritual. On May 1, meditate on what you want to understand more clearly. Write one intention for the month. On May 31, return to that intention and reflect on what changed. Then release one belief, habit, or fear that no longer supports you.
The new moon and full moon represent opposite but complementary energies in meditation. During a new moon, the side of the moon facing Earth is dark, and the moon is difficult or impossible to see. Spiritually, this makes the new moon a time for beginnings, quiet, planting seeds, and listening inward.
A new moon meditation is best for setting intentions, starting fresh, visualizing goals, and inviting possibility. It asks, “What do I want to grow?”
A full moon meditation is best for reflection, gratitude, release, forgiveness, and completion. It asks, “What has come into full awareness, and what am I ready to let go?”
The new moon is a quiet doorway, the full moon a bright mirror. One asks you to begin in trust, even before the path is visible; the other invites you to look honestly at what has grown, what has shifted, and what is ready to be released.
A month with two full moons gives you two exhalations, two moments of brightness, and two chances to clear space. That can be especially helpful if your goals require emotional release. Sometimes we cannot call in something new because we have not yet made room for it.
These two full moons may be a reminder that life sometimes gives us an extra light. In May 2026, let the first full moon show you what is ready to be seen, and let the Blue Moon help you release what is ready to be complete. Then move forward lighter, clearer, and more devoted to the life you are intentionally creating.
